A male chital (or spotted deer) emerges from the forest into a grassy meadow in Pench National Park in India.
Chital are social cervids and will form large groups, which is good for the individual. Larger groups are better able to detect approaching predators like tigers and often a herd of chital will graze under trees with langur monkeys, benefiting not only from falling fruit that the monkeys dislodge, but also from the langurs’ keen eyesight. When a tiger or leopard is spotted, the forest will erupt in a cacophony of alarm calls, warning others in the forest to be wary.
