Deviousness |
They are an uncommon sight outside their native Aus, and so fetch a high price by breeders.
The Major Mitchell's are highly sought after due to the fiery colors of their head crests. It's sometimes confused with the Rosebreasted Cockatoo by those not familiar with the more colourful species of 'Toos. Unfortunately, the Major's don't make as good a pet as some of the others of their kind.
As a bird lover & owner (Budgie & a White Capped Pionus parrot), I can appreciate a Cockatoo's beauty,
but I can tell you this without reservation:
You must be a VERY dedicated bird lover to take on the responsibilities of owning a Cockatoo.
Most have LONG lifespans - a 40 y.o bird is not uncommon.
Cockatoo's are birds you need to include in your last Will.
They'll take permanent mates and when bonded to a person, they require a significant amount of attention from their human companions.
While many can learn to talk with considerable proficiency, it's a double edged sword:
'Toos are also amongst the LOUDEST of all the parrots (They often enjoy a good loud "greeting" session at dawn & sunset).
They're such a beautiful but unusual sight, I kinda got carried away.
