A rather subdued female Sumatran tiger (Panther tigris sumatrae) at the Australia Zoo watches over her enclosure from the shadows, illuminated by a stray sunbeam.

I think this photo speaks to the well-planned enclosure design at the Australia Zoo, which not only provides a number of views for the guests, but also has a diverse landscape for the animals. Having such diversity in captivity is important to ensure animals feel comfortable. For example, in this enclosure there are both open areas if an animal wants to lay in the sun as well as shadowy areas such as this one, which are likely more than welcome on hot summer days. Although it isn't completely naturalized, spots like this definitely evoke the kind of forested Sumatran habitat where wild tigers roam.

---

Tigers are the largest of the big cats and are exclusively found in Asia from India to Vietnam, from Indonesia to the Russian Far East. The tiger can be divided into 9 subspecies: 4 are currently critically endangered and 3 are already extinct. Though estimations of tiger populations only a few years ago was 5,500-6,000, today populations are likely closer to 3,500 and are still declining. Dramatic declines of the tiger in India, thought to host the majority of the world's tigers, have fallen to less than 1,411. Overall, the past decade has seen a 40% reduction in tiger habitat, which now represents a mere 7% of its historic range. Poaching is a significant problem throughout the tiger's range, the demand for its body parts in traditional medicines, tonics, and exotic dishes driving a lucrative trade that is wiping out entire populations. Long-term threats include habitat fragmentation and prey depletion, which is accelerating the tiger's demise and subsequently reducing the long-term genetic viability of many populations.

If you want to help, the best for you to do is to educate yourself ([link]), never buy products made from tigers or endangered species ([link]), and tell others. Contact me for more information.

have you been to the Minneapolis Zoo in USA. its nothing compared to everywhere you have travelled, but here, they are the big zoo for tiger conservation and protection. their enclosure is MASSIVE and the range in colors of tigers they have is AMAZING from the reddish ones you show, to the almost creamsicle colored longer haired kind that i havent seen yet in your gallery to even true albinos with pink eyes. they are CONSTANTLY active and get to, most important of anything, ACT LIKE TIGERS without having to worry about idiot human behavior. Of they can even see us, they dont seem to care. I'd never seen anything like it, then again i cant go all of the beautiful places you can in the world. The first thing i want to do in ANY country i have been to is go to the zoo. i am a wolf and owl person though. Your pictures are beautiful and your passions are inspiring.
