This is Tatyana, a female Siberian Tiger at the Toronto Zoo and (as you can see), is not too pleased with me in this photo.

When I approached her she spotted me and started hissing immediately and carried on for a few seconds before getting up and walking off. I do not usually get that reaction from tigers, but there was something about me that she didn't like. It is quite possible that, with my orange-ish jacket and white shirt that she thought I was an invading tiger or perhaps she was annoyed by construction going on nearby...perhaps both. In any case, I do feel a bit bad because the last thing I wanted to do while at the zoo was to piss off animals.

Oh well, you cannot win 'em all.

This species, like its brothers, is increasingly under threat from habitat loss, prey depletion, and poaching for traditional medicines. We do not have to let them go extinct, we can make a difference. Please, go to this [link] and find out what you can do to help. You can also contact me personally...I'll be happy to answer your questions.

Tigers are the largest of the big cats and are exclusively found in Asia from India to Vietnam, from Indonesia to the Russian Far East. The tiger can be divided into 9 subspecies: 4 are currently critically endangered and 3 are already extinct. Though estimations of tiger populations only a few years ago was 5,500-6,000, today populations are likely closer to 3,500 and are still declining. Dramatic declines of the tiger in India, thought to host the majority of the world’s tigers, have fallen to less than 1,411. Overall, the past decade has seen a 40% reduction in tiger habitat, which now represents a mere 7% of its historic range. Poaching is a significant problem throughout the tiger’s range, the demand for its body parts in traditional medicines, tonics, and exotic dishes driving a lucrative trade that is wiping out entire populations. Long-term threats include habitat fragmentation and prey depletion, which is accelerating the tiger’s demise and subsequently reducing the long-term genetic viability of many populations.

If you want to help, the best for you to do is to educate yourself ([link]), never buy products made from tigers or endangered species ([link]), and tell others. Contact me for more information.

You could of been admitting a lot of different odors that startled or angered her, also tigers are not the largest cats on earth any more..
And i believe this lovely tiger wont be having any more litters anymore.=(

It's likely not scent-driven because 1) There was a thick pane of glass seperating me from her and B) She took offense to me as soon as I arrived. She wouldn't have had the opportunity to smell me.

I wasn't aware that tigers aren't the largest cats...which one is?

Why isn't Tatiana not having anymore litters?

according to the zoo she has a tag on her keeping her from having babies, i don't understand why but owell.

and Ligers are now the biggest of the cats and they are HUGE!

oh i thought you were on the outside by the bridge, otherwise that's strange she seems to be fairly calm.

Ligers don't exactly count since they would never naturally occur in the wild and are a hybrid species rather than one that is distinct. I loathe the fact they are popular since they take so much attention away from other deserving cats yet can contribute nothing to conservation and distort people's perceptions of what is right in breeding big cats.

It may just be that Tatiana is old and would be put under undue stress for having to raise more cubs. It's an intensive process for the animal after all. It likely has something to do with the SSP program she's involved with.

Yes i agree, but sadly the fact still remains they are the largest cats, yes they are a hybrid, just like the white tiger which is also not a natural species and is cruel to the species in general, but people are sick!

and yea shes about 9-10 now the women at the zoo wasn't quite sure as to why, but either way, shes still a beautiful cat.

Don't feel too bad about Tatiana, she's generally a jerk to everyone.(Worked with her and Tonghua, the male; Toma and Bashuta, the cubs... well 300lbs cubs lol) Tonghua and her are both the same, though he tends to be a bit more up front with his "go-way-now" methods. ^^;
Hope you had fun at the zoo!

Hopefully she was just having a bad day.

She sure looks ferocious, but really beautiful at the same time.
