China's last wild Indochinese tiger killed, eaten

Journal Entry: Wed Dec 23, 2009, 9:18 AM

A Chinese villager has reportedly killed and eaten the country's last wild Indochinese tiger.

Kang Wannian, from Mengla in Yunnan Province, encountered the beast at a nature park while foraging for clams along the country's border with Laos, according to London's Daily Telegraph.

Kang was sentenced to 12 years in jail by a local court, the newspaper reports, citing dispatches in the Chinese media.

In 2007, the last known wild Indochinese tiger in China was photographed at the same park where Kang slaughtered the animal.  It has not been seen since Kang's crime.

Government officials were quoted in local media denying there was any evidence that Kang's tiger was the last one, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Kang maintains he killed the large cat in self-defense.

He reportedly received 10 years for killing an endangered animal and two years for a firearms charge.

Four accomplices -- alleged to have helped Kang butcher the beast, then joined in eating it -- reportedly received three to four years for "covering up and concealing criminal gains."

The tiger species is teetering on the edge of extinction, with fewer than 1,000 still roaming the forests of Asia.

Just in case there is anyone here that cares. I hate to be the grinch, but big cats don't cease to be in trouble just because it's the holidays or because we ignore them. Apathy is the greater sin, in my mind.

That's absolutely terrible. The guy's sentence wasn't long enough, in my opinion. Humans like that are such selfish creatures.

I mean, it's one thing to KILL the tiger, but to then eat it? There are very few things more devistating than that that i can imagine.

this made me sad to read :( I hate those who kill endangered animals... i know I should do more for them than just sitting here and saying I hate them. How does that help? I wish some people had a bigger heart for animals....

Oh man, they do have low security on their national parks. That poachers try to make money is nothing new, especially in poor regions, where people feed their families with either the meet they poach or the money they make from it. - It is always sooo sad that news like this are true, but the actual problem is that people are (or feel to be) still in need to poach.
If you try to stay alive, I bet you would not care about global species problems either.
They should take more efford in turning poachers into rangers, but for this you need money and a government beeing with not against environmental organizations.

Ignorance and just plain non-caring is the greatest threat to our world's wildlife. This is another tragic example of that.
