China's last wild Indochinese tiger killed, eaten

Journal Entry: Wed Dec 23, 2009, 9:18 AM

A Chinese villager has reportedly killed and eaten the country's last wild Indochinese tiger.

Kang Wannian, from Mengla in Yunnan Province, encountered the beast at a nature park while foraging for clams along the country's border with Laos, according to London's Daily Telegraph.

Kang was sentenced to 12 years in jail by a local court, the newspaper reports, citing dispatches in the Chinese media.

In 2007, the last known wild Indochinese tiger in China was photographed at the same park where Kang slaughtered the animal.  It has not been seen since Kang's crime.

Government officials were quoted in local media denying there was any evidence that Kang's tiger was the last one, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Kang maintains he killed the large cat in self-defense.

He reportedly received 10 years for killing an endangered animal and two years for a firearms charge.

Four accomplices -- alleged to have helped Kang butcher the beast, then joined in eating it -- reportedly received three to four years for "covering up and concealing criminal gains."

The tiger species is teetering on the edge of extinction, with fewer than 1,000 still roaming the forests of Asia.

Just in case there is anyone here that cares. I hate to be the grinch, but big cats don't cease to be in trouble just because it's the holidays or because we ignore them. Apathy is the greater sin, in my mind.

Oh dear. this is shocking.
you brought tears to my eyes. surprisingly, I haven't seen this news on my local newspaper.

may be tomorrow. I'll keep my eyes open for it.

I don't really know if there were caring people or not, but I definitely do.

This is the worst news I've had in years.

that is so sickening...I think he should be given a much larger sentence. It makes me want to cry that soon the only place this beautiful creatures can be seen is in captivity..

The chinese will never learn unless someone steps in and give them a good proper spanking with a few nails and glass shards in the board. They don't give a damn about anyone or anything and will eat whatever lives around them. Someone seriously needs to put them in their place. Unfortunately I have the feeling we're literally not going to have wild tigers in existence in the next decade or two. China is too corrupt and uncaring to do anything about it.
The only tigers left will be in captivity and the damn Chinese will have to start eating their own live stock but they'll be sure soon to run out of that at the rate they're going. Ecologically they've frelled their system.

What the hell is wrong with people! :( Well, one good thing is that they didn't just kill and leave the body. At least the creature went to some good use. :pissedoff:
