Print Sale Results + Update + Good News

Journal Entry: Wed Oct 13, 2010, 7:42 PM
  • Mood: Miserable

Sale Results

Update: I appreciate the feedback. I'm still trying to make sense of everything, particularly the lack of interest overall. I try to be as engaging as possible and would definitely like to discern the reasons why no one felt compelled to comment so I would definitely appreciate more feedback so I can improve next time. I also tried to take a break and do some soul-searching lest I fall deeper into cynicism and depression.

There is some good news to come out of this past week. I found out from the Snow Leopard Trust that two of my prints were auctioned off for a total of $735 with fierce competition over Cub Condundrum ([link] and [link]. I was quite happy with that since it will go towards their amazing programs. It definitely improved my confidence.

---

There are still one "maybe", but after a week of holding the print sale the DeviantArt Tiger Day print sale results are more in:

Total Money Raised: $8.55

This total, combined with the fact that no people actually commented on this journal, pretty much confirms that this was a complete failure. I honestly don't know what to say right now...it's pretty heartbreaking on a number of levels. This really wasn't what I needed right now, let alone the tigers.

International Tiger Day Print Sale!

:thumb180542114:

Hello Tiger Fans!

I have a wonderful announcement to make. On Sunday, September 26th 2010, people around the world will be celebrating International Tiger Day. It's a day not only to show your love for this amazing species, but to also raise awareness for it's plight and to do our best to help!

About the Print Sale

In celebrating of International Tiger Day, I'm holding a print sale. What's so special about this print sale you ask? Well, for every print purchased between Sunday, September 26th and Sunday, October 3rd, I will donate 50% of the proceeds to programs that are working to save tigers in the wild. It's a great way to get some cool prints (maybe some future holiday gifts) and to help this amazing species. I usually donate my time, but in this economy, non-profits are suffering and definitely need some help financially.

If you are interested in participating in the print sale, send me a note!

Prizes

Aside from knowing you're helping conserve an amazing species, deviants will also have the opportunity to win a 3-month Premium Subscription. Just buy a print and you will be entered into a random draw to win! It's that simple!

Also, be one of the first 10 people to order a print and receive a free tiger goodie!

About Tigers

Tigers are the largest of the big cats and are exclusively found in Asia from India to Vietnam, from Indonesia to the Russian Far East. The tiger can be divided into 9 subspecies: 4 are currently critically endangered and 3 are already extinct.   Though estimations of tiger populations only a few years ago was 5,500-6,000, today populations are likely closer to 3,500 and are still declining. Dramatic declines of the tiger in India, thought to host the majority of the world's tigers, have fallen to less than 1,411. Overall, the past decade has seen a 40% reduction in tiger habitat, which now represents a mere 7% of its historic range. Poaching is a significant problem throughout the tiger's range, the demand for its body parts in traditional medicines, tonics, and exotic dishes driving a lucrative trade that is wiping out entire populations. Long-term threats include habitat fragmentation and prey depletion, which is accelerating the tiger's demise and subsequently reducing the long-term genetic viability of many populations.

If you want to help, the best for you to do is to educate yourself ([link], never buy products made from tigers or endangered species ([link], and tell others. Contact me for more information.

I hope you will consider participating either by buying prints or by spreading the word. I think it's a great opportunity to do some real good.

Why buy from you? What do you have to offer that others don't?

I would like to think that my work speaks for itself. However, there are more reasons. When you buy prints from me, you know that you are supporting someone you know rather than some large multi-national corporation. Also, as I'm currently in the hunt for a job, the income I get from my prints is very much appreciated. When I do find work, the income I'll receive from my prints will help me work towards buying a more advanced camera, which will ultimately assist me in providing more photos of greater technical quality. Furthermore, this will help in my goal on DeviantArt of raising more awareness for conservation and the animals I photograph.

About Me

When in high-school, I wanted to be a wildlife photographer. I took courses in photography and art, but after finding out about tigers and how endangered they are, I decided to dedicate my life to saving them. However, I still am involved in photography as a hobby. It is through my photography I wish to inform people about the world's most endangered animals and inspire people to help.

To find out more about how and why I got started with tigers, please visit this [link]

I volunteer for numerous conservation organizations, traveled to Asia to assist conservation efforts, spearheaded public involvement initiatives and am now on the cusp of beginning a career in helping protect wildlife. I hope you will join me on my journey to help create a clean, sustainable future where all humans and wildlife can flourish. It is up to us.

I rarely comment on journals because, well, I have little to say.
I think your prints are cool and well priced, but my room is already horribly cluttered. If I buy a print, I want to do so in order to display it, not to just have it sit in a box.

I'm gonna apologize real fast because the following is going to sound really mean. My inbox is always flooded with alot of journals and I don't always have time to read through all of them let alone comment on them, but from what I've noticed about you is that you're always actively doing something, some sort of event or a fundraiser, that's what it looks like to me. So it's more or less normal for people to run out of money with which they can support your actions and once it's at that point already it would feel bad to comment saying something like "I'm sorry I can't help you anymore" or if people didn't have the money to begin with, those events slowly start to dig in their hearts as they feel that there is nothing else they can do but to avoid looking at those journals drooling over something they can't get, because the guilt that builds up inside knowing that you can't help is tremendous. Caring is a good thing in this world and it's obvious that you care, but maybe you're coming on too strong for some people who are shy enough as it is. Blatantly attacking your watchers even if I do realize you were hurt just makes people feel even more guilt and that's mean. It's not just you that needs your watcher's support, they need it too, they're all watching you because they look up to you, but they also feel your warmth and kindness as a person. Just because things didn't go as you wanted them to doesn't give you the right to hurt others. I am truly sorry it sounds mean but those are my feelings.

Feel free to look in my journals. You will find that fundraising and other projects are few and far between and when I do have one, I do not constantly pressure people. I try to pick things to promote wisely and try not to overwhelm people...it takes a lot too since there is a lot more I would like to do. I doubt that, as you suggest, I've simply taken everyone's money and asked for more.

I also disagree that being disappointed and "blatantly attacking" are synonymous. I don't think it's much to hope that out of 1800 people, one person would be there to give support in the form of a comment, even if they can't afford anything. You seem worried about people's guilt but I assure you I feel quite a bit myself.

I know you don't too it all that often, but you do them a lot and for people that seems often enough. Of course you do not pressure them intentionally but you have to understand that people will still feel pressured whether you can do something about it or not. I never said anything you did was bad, I was merely offended by the fact that you lashed out at people complaining about them not even commenting without you even trying to understand their feelings. People are going through a lot these days and considering this is an artist community you should understand that something like "a starving artist" is quite common these days. I also realize that you feel guilt about not being able to help the animals you love so much, but with this journal alone you are pressuring people to feel guilt. People who don't have money as it is but still have that little pride left that doesn't allow them to admit it. Please understand, it's hard to simply comment with something as disappointing as "I'm sorry I can't help". I know with these comments I am making you feel even more guilt but you need to realize, we have enough guilt as it is, you don't have to write such journals to make us feel more of it. You should have faith in your watchers and believe that they are all caring people or at the very least the most of them are. Of course you also need reassurance that people do care, I can understand that, but with that alone... You're being egoistic. I'm sorry this feels like I'm attacking you, I'm not, I'm merely trying to make you understand that it's hard enough as it is, even without the additional guilt.

It actually does feel like you're attacking me, suggesting I only care about myself with your "egoistic" comment, which I think is downright offensive, out of place, and wrong, aside from other statements I think are too presumptuous to be projected as popular opinion. I definitely disagree with the idea that I am somehow in an ivory tower and can't understand people's circumstances. I'm not exactly doing well myself financially so to suggest I'm out of touch with other people in that sense I think is certainly misinformed. If you think I'm frustrated that financially stressed people didn't give me money, you would be incorrect. My disappointment centers primarily around the general apathy I encountered and the exodus of watcher support when I needed friends. I don't think it is at all selfish or wrong to be disappointed in having something so close to you be ignored by so many, which you seem to agree with at some points, but accuse me of being insensitive with while you make other points. Moreover, in no way do I think making the journal post I did could ever be considered "pressuring"; in fact, most fundraisers would suggest it is far too passive and I wanted make an effort not to pressure people. If you felt intimidated by the mere suggestion of helping raise money for a good cause in a couple journals, I would think you would be unnecessarily fragile.

If you would like to speak for yourself, I would most certainly welcome the feedback, but I would hope that you would limit projecting your own feelings onto others and suggesting the way you feel represents everyone. You also do a fair bit of unfair accusing in my direction with an unhealthy amount of assumptions, which isn't conducive to constructive conversation.

If you're offended because you felt like I was pressuring you to give money or suggested that you didn't care, I apologize. Moreover, my journal was never intended to try and make people feel guilty.
