Print Sale Results + Update + Good News

Journal Entry: Wed Oct 13, 2010, 7:42 PM
  • Mood: Miserable

Sale Results

Update: I appreciate the feedback. I'm still trying to make sense of everything, particularly the lack of interest overall. I try to be as engaging as possible and would definitely like to discern the reasons why no one felt compelled to comment so I would definitely appreciate more feedback so I can improve next time. I also tried to take a break and do some soul-searching lest I fall deeper into cynicism and depression.

There is some good news to come out of this past week. I found out from the Snow Leopard Trust that two of my prints were auctioned off for a total of $735 with fierce competition over Cub Condundrum ([link] and [link]. I was quite happy with that since it will go towards their amazing programs. It definitely improved my confidence.

---

There are still one "maybe", but after a week of holding the print sale the DeviantArt Tiger Day print sale results are more in:

Total Money Raised: $8.55

This total, combined with the fact that no people actually commented on this journal, pretty much confirms that this was a complete failure. I honestly don't know what to say right now...it's pretty heartbreaking on a number of levels. This really wasn't what I needed right now, let alone the tigers.

International Tiger Day Print Sale!

:thumb180542114:

Hello Tiger Fans!

I have a wonderful announcement to make. On Sunday, September 26th 2010, people around the world will be celebrating International Tiger Day. It's a day not only to show your love for this amazing species, but to also raise awareness for it's plight and to do our best to help!

About the Print Sale

In celebrating of International Tiger Day, I'm holding a print sale. What's so special about this print sale you ask? Well, for every print purchased between Sunday, September 26th and Sunday, October 3rd, I will donate 50% of the proceeds to programs that are working to save tigers in the wild. It's a great way to get some cool prints (maybe some future holiday gifts) and to help this amazing species. I usually donate my time, but in this economy, non-profits are suffering and definitely need some help financially.

If you are interested in participating in the print sale, send me a note!

Prizes

Aside from knowing you're helping conserve an amazing species, deviants will also have the opportunity to win a 3-month Premium Subscription. Just buy a print and you will be entered into a random draw to win! It's that simple!

Also, be one of the first 10 people to order a print and receive a free tiger goodie!

About Tigers

Tigers are the largest of the big cats and are exclusively found in Asia from India to Vietnam, from Indonesia to the Russian Far East. The tiger can be divided into 9 subspecies: 4 are currently critically endangered and 3 are already extinct.   Though estimations of tiger populations only a few years ago was 5,500-6,000, today populations are likely closer to 3,500 and are still declining. Dramatic declines of the tiger in India, thought to host the majority of the world's tigers, have fallen to less than 1,411. Overall, the past decade has seen a 40% reduction in tiger habitat, which now represents a mere 7% of its historic range. Poaching is a significant problem throughout the tiger's range, the demand for its body parts in traditional medicines, tonics, and exotic dishes driving a lucrative trade that is wiping out entire populations. Long-term threats include habitat fragmentation and prey depletion, which is accelerating the tiger's demise and subsequently reducing the long-term genetic viability of many populations.

If you want to help, the best for you to do is to educate yourself ([link], never buy products made from tigers or endangered species ([link], and tell others. Contact me for more information.

I hope you will consider participating either by buying prints or by spreading the word. I think it's a great opportunity to do some real good.

Why buy from you? What do you have to offer that others don't?

I would like to think that my work speaks for itself. However, there are more reasons. When you buy prints from me, you know that you are supporting someone you know rather than some large multi-national corporation. Also, as I'm currently in the hunt for a job, the income I get from my prints is very much appreciated. When I do find work, the income I'll receive from my prints will help me work towards buying a more advanced camera, which will ultimately assist me in providing more photos of greater technical quality. Furthermore, this will help in my goal on DeviantArt of raising more awareness for conservation and the animals I photograph.

About Me

When in high-school, I wanted to be a wildlife photographer. I took courses in photography and art, but after finding out about tigers and how endangered they are, I decided to dedicate my life to saving them. However, I still am involved in photography as a hobby. It is through my photography I wish to inform people about the world's most endangered animals and inspire people to help.

To find out more about how and why I got started with tigers, please visit this [link]

I volunteer for numerous conservation organizations, traveled to Asia to assist conservation efforts, spearheaded public involvement initiatives and am now on the cusp of beginning a career in helping protect wildlife. I hope you will join me on my journey to help create a clean, sustainable future where all humans and wildlife can flourish. It is up to us.

Alright, I'm sorry I lashed out but I felt hurt by your journal and could not control my feelings. I do look up to you as someone who cares and does a great deal for the animals I have absolutely no way of helping, so keep up what you're doing and don't feel down, I understand the disappointment of seemingly not caring people, but be reassured people do care, about you, what you're doing and the animals. Never did I say you were egoistic in general, just that this one journal made you look like that. It's that what I was trying to correct. I'm sorry I may have been incomprehensible and seemed to be overly aggressive, but even though I knew for a fact I was making you feel more guilt, I couldn't control my feelings and had to let you know of my own feelings towards that journal. I just hope you wont feel down by a minor setback just as this in the future and have faith in your watchers who you should already know, are caring people. I'm sorry if what I say confuses you but with English not being my native language it's hard to convey my feelings without seeming aggressive. I am someone who believes in saying what I think is right, because feeling hurt inside and letting it swell up without the person in question without it ever knowing and having a chance to correct it, seems wrong. It is quite sad that a lot of times that makes me look like a complete jackass and I do at some points say more than I should being insensitive to other people's feelings. But even if it makes me and that person feel bad I can at least say I was being honest with my feelings. Also I'm sorry it feels like I'm saying your watchers feel like this, generalizing like that, but I was merely bringing out examples of what could be, I was not pointing fingers at anyone.

I understand. We can't control how we feel...that applies to both of us.

I would also advise against saying that you "have absolutely no way of helping". That's precisely the same idea I've been trying to combat here; it's a self-defeating and simply ill-informed perspective. I always try to show people that they can help, even if they don't have the wealth that others may have. I never considered myself wealthy, but it hasn't stopped me from volunteering over 1000 hours in the past few years for conservation groups (including online work), starting petitions, and fundraising. I would suggest instead of telling yourself that you can't, try and explore opportunities (even if it is small and doesn't involve money) to do something. You have the Internet at your disposal and thus, have a legion of opportunities to do something for a cause you care about, not the least of which could include learning more about a cause which is an important first step. Once you change that way of thinking, you'll be well on your way to making a difference.

As I do with everyone that shows the slightest bit of interest, I offer you to send me a note if you have particular questions on what you can do based on your situation and I would happily offer advice based on my experiences. That vast majority of people don't accept this invitation.

Well one thing I did try to do was share a link from an Estonian zoo that allows you to look at leopards real time but since it's basically a webcam and in real time, you got to time it right to actually see any activity. So I guess that's kind of bad. But if you do manage to see them in real time, it really is quite amazing. It's been a while since I last visited the page and to my surprise they actually got better quality cameras up now. If you're interested then follow these 2 links to Amur Leopards and Snow Leopards.

There are also cameras for African Elephants and Eagles.

Sharing resources like that is never a bad idea, especially if it involves education about certain animals or getting people involved in a cause (like this: [link]). Spreading the word and sharing ideas is a great way to help and it doesn't cost anything but a few minutes.

I have to totally agree with everything you said there,

I also want to make a point that people come in here to show of their art.. I think what is being done here is very admirable but this is mainly an art community not a place for fund raising, all well and good if you get that support in here. Please done be surprised if you dont.

Hey, sorry, I didn't comment because I couldn't buy anything and I didn't want to clog up your inbox going "I can't buy the prints or anything. Lame, I know." I'm sorry about that. Next time I'll comment, all right? Chin up.

Sorry for not commenting! :noes: I've been really busy and haven't really been on the computer.

Wish I could help but I'm pretty much broke at the moment. ):

Aw, I'm sorry that I haven't been so supportive lately myself. :( It's just been such a bitch dealing with work and some of the personal stuff going on. But please let me know if there is anything that I can do, either to help or just to lift your spirits!

I hope you feel better soon, although I understand why you took it so hard...

Hi. I don't know if I've ever commented on your work beyond a few photos. First, I'd like to say I really admire what you do (both the beautiful photography and donating your time and money). I understand your desire to help save these beautiful animals and others.

I would love to own tons of beautiful prints and plaster them over my walls, and help you fundraise in the process. Unfortunately, I don't make enough money to even support myself, let alone these wonderful creatures.

But if you need help in any other way, I'd certainly love to help.

+cheers+

No worries. Any support is appreciated, even if it is simply being there to offer encouragement or feedback.
