Journal Entry: Thu Mar 4, 2010, 5:44 PM

Updates

Update:Your's truly turns 24 Friday March 5th. If anyone wants to make my birthday extra awesome, why not consider buying a print? You'll be supporting an awesome mission of mine and you'll be entered into a draw to win a subscription...plus you get cool photos of amazing animals! Not too shabby. Take a look below for more info!

Hello Everyone!

For those who have followed my journal, I recently had the opportunity to win a contest and fulfill a dream to visit the Australia Zoo ([link]. Unfortunately, I didn’t win; however, I did win an $800 travel voucher which could be used in Australia. The problem is that I have to get to Australia to use it or it will expire! Since I couldn't get a job to support myself last summer, it makes things difficult.

I don't want all your efforts to help me get to Australia to be in vain. As a result, after considering some suggestions I have dusted myself off and decided to try and raise some money to help me get there the only way I know how: no, it isn't sexual favors, it is:

How Can I Help?

If you would like to help, feel free to contact me. The biggest help would be to advertise this either by including it in your journal or linking friends and family to the site. This would be particularly helpful if framed within a holiday shopping context. Buying prints or encouraging others is an easy way to help make holiday shopping quick and painless while simultaneously supporting a reasonably good cause.

Another way to help is to donate an adCast account ([link]. AdCast is an investment in advertising on DeviantArt which would help bring more people to the print sale and thus, increase the chances it could be successful.

Why buy from you? What do you have to offer that others don't?

The way I see it, you could either buy a print from someone else and possibly be supporting murder or you could help make someone's dream come true while also getting an awesome print!

If you are doing some holiday shopping, you could either support huge multinational corporations that rape the Earth while they give their top employees huge bonuses or you can support someone who is fighting for the conservation of tigers and could use a little R&R.

In all seriousness, I don't foresee any way I could afford to use the voucher that I won otherwise. I would be flying the cheapest airlines possible...all I want to do is find a means to get there.

Why aren't your selling prints through DeviantArt?

As much as I love DeviantArt, they love to take the lion's share of print profits. For example, I recently made a sale where I made a total profit of 14 cents. That's pretty sad.

In most cases, buying directly from me will not only be cheaper for you, but it will also mean more fair profit for myself, which means an increased likelihood I'll be able to make the trip!

How Many Purchases Will It Take to Get You There?

Good question! The cheapest flight I have found is $1000 round trip. It is entirely dependent on what's purchased but I would be able to afford the trip if:

  • 50 people buy an individual 11 x 14 print

  • 70 people buy an individual 8 x 11 print

  • 125 people buy an individual 5 x 7 print

  • 225 people buy an individual 4 x 6 print

That's not really a whole lot, so it is well within the realm of possibility. 1,475 people currently watch me so I could afford the trip even if only 15% of watchers bought the cheapest possible print. Conversely, only 3.3% would be needed if each person bought an 11 x 14 print. If people are as generous as I've seen they are, I might have a chance.

Every purchase, no matter how small, matters, just as each vote in the Khaki Contest mattered.

Is there a deadline?

Not really. However, I am aiming for early May since that is when the cheapest flights run. As for the subscription, it will be awarded if I can raise half of my goal. If I reach my goal, more subscriptions may be given out, particularly in consideration of those who contributed the most either financially or in advertising (so contact me if you are actively helping out).

You're being selfish! I should donate to a real charity

Yes, you should and you are right... I've decided to be selfish, but given all my non-selfish behavior after all these years, I think it's okay. After donating to charity, if you have any money left over that you can spare, please consider helping me out. I'd really appreciate it.

There you have it! I would very much appreciate the help in any form you can imagine.

Examples of My Work

When in high-school, I wanted to be a wildlife photographer. I took courses in photography and art, but after finding out about tigers and how endangered they are, I decided to dedicate my life to saving them. However, I still am involved in photography as a hobby. It is through my photography I wish to inform people about the world's most endangered animals and inspire people to help.

Congrats! That photo is absolutely gorgeous. It almost looks like he's smiling (although I assume it's the beginning of either a yawn or flehmen response). You manage to capture the most amazing portraits of tigers. I suppose it's all in the patience and devotion... because they are certainly far too wild and regal to lower themselves to "posing" for us silly monkeys and our cameras. ;)

I still love your photo of Nadya! It's absolutely beautiful and such a perfect shot. I hope your print sales are going well! I would love to see you get to Australia.

Happy year of the tiger, tiger friend!

He was still shedding bits of his winter fur off and, when he'd groom, the fur would get stuck on the papillae on his tongue so he had to really work at it to get the fur out of his mouth...hence the wacky expression. =P

One thing I dislike about going to the zoo is hearing all the other people with their cameras telling others how the animal was either posing for them or not posing for them. I think it's a rotten attitude to have... I mean, you're a guest in the animal's home not it's boss. You wouldn't go to someone's house and demand they rearrange the furniture. I've started wearing headphones to listen to music when I go because the astounding ignorance of people is mind-numbing. It's not a "Serbian tiger" people! For the love of God, read the sign! </mini-rant>

I'm glad you still like Nadya's photo...thanks again. Sales have slowed down quite a bit so I'm going to have to get creative.

Oh, I see! I've seen Ursula and Chenita at Jungle Cat World make that face many a time, then. They just can't stand having hair or feathers on their food.

Ha ha, yes, I know what you mean about the level of stupid that goes on at the zoo. The worst is when parents are telling kids things about the animals that are obviously not true (and, like you said, easy to verify if they would just READ). My favourite so far has been a father telling his son that the snow leopards were "mountain cheetahs," and a boyfriend telling his girlfriend that they "should totally get a tiger as a pet, because look how sweet tigers are, and their apartment lets them keep cats." :| And people tapping on the glass or shouting at the animals... ooh, that pisses me off. I'll talk to the animals sometimes, but only those that are already looking at me in an interested fashion. I would certainly never do that to an animal that is sleeping or obviously just wanting to ignore the people. Taking the headphones sounds like a good idea. I might do that next time I go by myself.

All you have to do is look at the rocks hanging in the net above the snow leopards and you die a little inside. I once reported someone for throwing cookies... COOKIES... into the Sumatran tiger enclosure. I didn't know if security got them, but I'd gladly patrol the zoo looking for people like that.

What makes me laugh though is often the kids are smarter than the parents, but it's sad when parents still insist on correcting them.

No kidding. I'm born in the year+lunar cycle of the tiger and my most popular deviation ever was uploaded on the first day of the year of the tiger...and it happens to be a photo of a tiger.

Tigers everywhere! Yay!
